Orange County Heritage Day: Becoming Florida

January 23rd


On January 23, the History Center continues its annual tradition of celebrating our county’s official beginnings with free admission and fun activities for the whole family, adding a special theme for 2021: “Becoming Florida.”

 It’s the bicentennial year of Florida’s becoming part of the United States in 1821 – a major milestone in a long past shaped by a rich tapestry of people and cultures. During 2021, the History Center will explore the historical Floridians who created the state we know today, through a variety of “Becoming Florida” programs. They begin in January with our special 2021 edition of Orange County Heritage Day.

Join Orlando Ballet for a very special one-night-only immersive experience as we transform Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre into a night in 19th century Paris. The Ballet Ball will be nothing short of spectacular! Indulge and delight in wine, cocktails, delicious cuisine, and, of course, dancing! Proceeds from sponsorship, ticket sales, and treats will support the area of greatest need in delivery of the mission to entertain, educate and enrich the community through the highest quality of dance.

Bring a flashlight and enter the Jurassic Gardens to hunt for dinosaurs! Explore the grounds at night and learn about dinosaurs that once roamed the earth. This is a fun event for all ages. Kids dress up in your dino costume and don't forget to bring a flashlight.

Opera Orlando presents Hansel & Gretel

Bring the family to the remount of Opera Orlando’s holiday confectionery treat, Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel. Sung in English and reduced to a kid-friendly 75 minutes in the intimate Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, this retelling of the Grimm fairy tale features a lush score, charming characters, and a delightfully villainous witch.
